Aid Association for German Music Care

The Aid Association for German Music Care e. V. ( Aid Organization for the Promotion of German Music and Musicians until 1921 ) was founded in 1920 by the Hungarian-Jewish violinist , violin teacher and music writer Carl Flesch . The office was at Schillstrasse 9, in the Berlin district of Tiergarten .

The reason for founding such an aid organization was the fact that after the First World War and the inflation, German musical life was on the ground and many artists suffered hardship. The aim of the association was therefore to provide financial support for musicians who had fallen into poverty or were unemployed . The Aid Association played an important role in supporting musicians, especially since the Prussian Ministry for Science, Art and Education provided financial support to the Aid Association and forwarded incoming requests from musicians to it. The association organized large charity festivals and associated lotteries for its support organization, and raised donations from private individuals and companies.

A number of well-known musicians, composers and publishers were involved in the association, such as Flesch, the composer and director of the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin , Georg Schumann , 1st chairman of the association since 1920, and the German-Jewish music publisher Henri Hinrichsen .

The relief union had to be dissolved on June 22, 1936. In a letter dated June 24, 1936, Richard Stern, the son of Julius Stern , wrote to Georg Schumann: “It was an honor and a real pleasure for me to be able to work with you, esteemed Professor, for so many years together for the benefit of the musicians in need, and it is very painful for me that the day before yesterday we had to bury our beloved child. Their absence was sincerely regretted ... ”.
