Hillcrest Cemetery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hillcrest Cemetery is a burial ground in the small Texas town of Forney . It is located in the northwest of the town on the former US Highway 80 (today: FM 688) near the intersection with the FM 740.

history

After the Brooklyn parish was relocated and renamed Forney in 1873 due to the construction of the railroad by the Texas and Pacific Railroad , the former Brooklyn cemetery proved unsuitable.

In 1878 a committee of influential men organized the Forney Graveyard Company. She bought two hectares of land. The oldest documented graves are those of M. Elizabeth Collins (1813–1867) and Blanch Ivey and Isaac Sorey, both of whom died in 1879. In 1880 the area was parceled out and formally designated as a public burial place for the rapidly growing railway town. The cemetery was later expanded to include neighboring properties. The Hillcrest name solidified around 1910.

Many settlers from the time of the conquest and well-known parishioners found their final resting place in Hillcrest Cemetery. Five well-known veterans of the American Civil War are also buried there.

A foundation has been maintaining the area since 1976.
