The Hino da Independência (Independence Anthem) is a patriotic Brazilian song from 1822, which was written on the occasion of the independence from the colonial power Portugal .

The text was written by Evaristo da Veiga , Emperor Peter I composed the melody. Until the abdication of Peter I in 1831, the song served as the national anthem of the Brazilian Empire .
