Deer Pharmacy at the Schuhhof

The Hirsch pharmacy is the oldest pharmacy still in existence in the UNESCO World Heritage old town of Goslar . Founded in 1780 as a herb and drug store at Schuhhof, it has existed as a pharmacy since 1808. Because of its completely preserved Biedermeier interior, it is one of the most beautiful pharmacies in Germany.

Interior decoration

The outer facade is clearly structured in a classical style , the interior is also characterized by elements of the Biedermeier and Napoleonic Empire from the early 19th century. Soft green painting on the white body characterize the color scheme of the interior. In the middle is the recipe table with floral carving, behind it on the left a white tiled stove from Berlin, on the shelves there are white porcelain jars with fine black lettering, also from the early days of the pharmacy.

history

In 1780 a drug and herb shop was opened in the house at Schuhhof, which was newly built after the great fire in Goslar, and was taken over in 1800 by the pharmacist JA Meinecke. In 1808 his successor, pharmacist JW Osten, was finally allowed to name the drug dealership after the freedom of trade proclaimed by King Jérôme Bonaparte of Westphalia (a brother of Napoléon Bonaparte ) "pharmacy" and thus break the monopoly of the city council pharmacy.

Pharmacist Adolph Haars

In 1840 Carl Ludwig Hirsch took over this pharmacy and gave it his name. In 1842, after the early death of CL Hirsch, his widow sold the pharmacy for 15,000 Reichstaler to her brother-in-law Carl August Wilhelm Hirsch, who ran the pharmacy so well that a royal audit log from 1847 reads: “The two pharmacies in Goslar are indisputably among the best in the kingdom (Hanover) ”(The other pharmacy is the Goslarer Rats-Apotheke on the market, which existed until 2008). By 1865, CAW Hirsch had increased sales from initially 3,000 Reichstaler to 6114 Reichstaler.

Pharmacist Otto Haars

In 1866 pharmacist Adolph Schumacher bought the Hirsch pharmacy for 22,000 Reichstaler and after 17 years sold it in 1883 to the pharmacist Adolph Haars for 30,000 Reichstaler. He took over the production of the medicinal specialties of the “herbal doctor” lamp, which became known far beyond Germany's borders. One of the patients was in particular King George V of Hanover with his family. Even today, the Hirsch pharmacy produces Lampe's herbal elixir according to an old recipe.

In 1907 Otto Haars took over his father's pharmacy. His equestrian picture still hangs in the stairwell today. In 1947 he was succeeded by Hans-Jürgen Haars, who made a special contribution to the preservation and restoration of the Biedermeier ensemble. The Hirsch pharmacy, which is still owned by the family today, is now managed by Annegret Haars.
