PubMed Central ( PMC ) is a freely accessible database containing scientific literature from medicine , biology and related fields in full text . PMC was established by the United States National Library of Medicine and is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The number of available articles is (as of 2019) 5.7 million and is growing continuously. The publications are marked with the PMCID (PubMed Central Identifier) ​​code and made accessible.

Since 2008, it has been a legal requirement in the USA (HR 2764) that all research results obtained through the support of the NIH are published in the original form or as a copy at PMC within twelve months. Some magazines have been granted a period of six months as an embargo . The law is being discussed in the context of the open access debate.
