Building history and architecture

At the beginning of the 14th century Bergheim received city rights. As a rule, the preservation of city rights also involved building a town hall. This cannot be determined for Bergheim. On June 27, 1911, the Bergheim mayor's office received its first independent town hall, which Mayor Kirchmann opened in the presence of numerous guests. It took the district architect Anton Ruland almost two years for the planning and construction. The architectural style is referred to as a "purified regional style in the context of the Deutscher Werkbund with echoes of Art Nouveau and neoclassicism".

The entrance area from that time is still preserved today. It is located on today's Schützenstraße and is located in the entrance bay, which has a curved hood as a roof. This component and the biaxial part of the building on the side are still in their original state from the outside. In the facade you can still see the location of the old council chamber on the upper floor by the four rectangular, evenly lined up windows. The town hall clock has found its place in the mansard gable above.

After the First World War, the town hall was confiscated by the British occupation and served as the seat of the British district command. It was rebuilt several times and expanded for the first time in 1937. The extension took place along Bethlehemer Straße in the direction of today's Konrad-Adenauer-Platz. The office of the mayor, his anteroom, the office of the head of the office and the official treasury were housed in the new rooms. In addition, the previous meeting room was converted into a “wedding hall”. The police also found their domicile in the extended town hall.

In the early 1960s, the town hall received a new entrance between the historic building and the building constructed in 1937. The last extension so far took place in 1965. To the north, the town hall received another two-storey extension, which contained the city treasury on the ground floor, the offices of the city director and treasurer on the first floor and the meeting room on the second floor.

Todays use

Today the town hall, which still serves as the seat of the Bergheim city administration, consists of two building complexes, the "historic" town hall and a modern wing of the building, the former district building that was rebuilt in 1996. The so-called "civil servant career", a path framed by glass, connects the two buildings.
