history

On July 6, 2005, the municipal company Hochsauerlandwasser GmbH was founded. The three partner municipalities of Bestwig, Meschede and Olsberg transferred their water supply companies, which had previously been run as proprietary operations, to Hochsauerlandwasser GmbH on December 31, 2005, which started its supply activities on January 1, 2006. The transfer took place by way of a spin-off in accordance with the Transformation Act (UmwG). After the merger in the water supply sector, considerations arose since 2006 to operate the energy supply jointly and to (re-) municipalize it. HochsauerlandEnergie GmbH (HE) was then founded on May 6, 2009 with the aim of jointly remunicipalising the electricity and gas supply. The HE is a municipal energy supply company (EVU) that was founded by the cities of Meschede and Olsberg and the municipality of Bestwig together with the city of Lippstadt. HochsauerlandEnergie's shareholders are in equal parts the municipal company Hochsauerlandwasser GmbH and Stadtwerke Lippstadt GmbH. In addition to selling electricity (since 2009) and gas (since 2010), HochsauerlandEnergie GmbH has been the sole owner and shareholder of Hochsauerland Netze GmbH & Co.KG and thus the electricity and gas networks in the cities of Meschede and Olsberg since January 1, 2020 as well as in the municipality of Bestwig. Hochsauerlandwasser GmbH has been responsible for street lighting in Bestwig, Meschede and Olsberg since 2010.
