Altiplano maximum security prison

The Altiplano maximum security prison (Spanish: Centro Federal de Readaptación Social Número 1 "Altiplano" ) is one of 17 prisons administered by the Mexican government. It is located on the premises of the Ex Rancho la Palma in the town of Santa Juana in the municipality of Almoloya de Juárez in the state of México . It is approximately 25 kilometers from Toluca , the capital of the state of México, and approximately 90 kilometers from Mexico City .

The prison was built between 1988 and 1990 under the then Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gortari . From November 1991, prisoners were housed there. The property, delimited with security systems, extends to 260,000 square meters. The prison building, which was designed for 836 inmates, covers 28,000 square meters.

Altiplano is considered the safest prison in Mexico, is equipped with high-tech control systems and is continuously monitored with video cameras and motion sensors. Nevertheless, El Chapo was able to escape through a tunnel on July 11, 2015.
