The history of the Gassenbach estate can be traced back to the extinct village of Gassenbach south of Idstein. This village existed from around 1250 and was first mentioned in 1316. The Hofgut emerges from this village and was extensively expanded in 1662 by the builder August Rumpf .

On the initiative of government councilor Karl Ibell , a model economy was set up at the Gassenbacher Hofgut around 1812 in connection with the founding of the Idstein Agricultural School, the first agricultural school in western Germany. It was opened in 1818. Wilhelm Albrecht became the director . The aim was to test and disseminate new farming methods.

In 1811/1812 the courtyard house was rebuilt as a Pisé building according to the plan of the building inspector at the time, Johann Christian Zais . In the period that followed, various renovations of the buildings were carried out.

From 1917 on, it was leased to the city of Frankfurt , which in turn passed on the Gassenbach estate to the Kalmenhof educational institution in 1930 . Since the Kalmenhof was affiliated to the State Welfare Association of Hesse after the Second World War , ownership of the estate changed accordingly.

In October 2001, the Mechtildshausen domain took over the Gassenbach estate.

Description of the plant

The complex that was once closed on four sides is now only partially recognizable. The former courtyard house takes up one narrow side. In the west there are a number of barns and stables with pointed barrel roofs. Most of it was built in 1923 to replace four burned down barns. The northern barn dates back to the 19th century, but has been extensively changed. An old weather vane can be found on the fire wall. Other modern farm buildings can be found as replacements for broken down parts of the facility. It houses a farm shop, a café and a restaurant, among other things.
