High edge
High edge denotes a place in the canopy of a bed where wealthy people used to hide their savings. Often there was a special secret compartment in a beam of the canopy for this purpose.
Even in old chests there is a drawer on the upper (high) edge in which money was placed.
From this custom, the view has been derived that the phrase “put on the high edge” for “save a little” is derived from this.
When sailing , the crew sits on the high edge (the windward side) to reduce the heel . The overview is also best there.
