Tall fir trees show the stars

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

High fir trees show the stars (also Das Rübezahl lied ) is a German folk song , which was first published in 1923 by the Association of German Ring Scouts.

History and origin

The song is said to have its origin in the Franconian song “True friendship should not waver” from the 18th century. The author and composer of this version are unknown. The text zu Hohe Tannen show the stars was published anonymously in 1923 in the magazine Jugendland of the German ring scouts . A few years after the publication, the last stanza "Our course of armed life consecrated" was changed to "consecrated the course of our life" due to its martial content. Over the years, new verses were published to the song.

Lyrics 1923

Hohe Tannen show the stars

Hohe Tannen show the stars
An der Iser in foaming flood.
Home is a long way off, but
you, Rübezahl, look after it well.

Have given yourself to us too, who
spins out the legends and fairy tales,
And in the deepest forest peace, takes
the form of a giant.

Come to us by the blazing fire,
To the mountains on a stormy night.
Protect the tents, the home, the dear ones,
come and keep the watch with us.

Listen, Rübezahl, let me tell you:
People and homeland are never free.
Swing the club like in the old days,
Break strife and discord in two.

White flower in the light up there,
dreams on of the wild quarrel
For you flower is
consecrated in the ring up there Our armed forces of life.
