Azulene

Pseudoazulenes are isoelectronic heteroaromatics with ten electrons related to the non- benzoid aromatic hydrocarbon azulenes . If you formally replace a C = C group in the cycloheptatriene ring of the azulene molecule with a heteroatom (O, S, NR), you get a pseudoazulene:

  • Oxalene,
  • Thialene and
  • Azalens.

The pseudoazulenes - especially those with little substitution - are less stable than azulenes.

Reactivity

The electrophilic substitution ( bromination , nitration , Vilsmeier formylation ) is known, as is the substitution on the five-membered ring known from the azulenes .
