The Dutch Iris ( Iris × hollandica hort.) Is a hybrid from the kind of irises (Iris) within the family of the Iridaceae (Iridaceae). The species is similar to the Spanish iris (Iris xiphium) . It was created from 1891 onwards from crossing Spanish iris with Iris tingitana , Iris boissieri and other species. They bloom in May. There are numerous varieties with purple, blue, yellow, bronze and white flowers. It is grown all year round for the production of cut flowers in greenhouses. In outdoor cultivation it is not very persistent, sensitive and needs winter protection.
