Master of the woodcuts of Livy from Mainz

As a master of woodcuts of the Mainz Livy or woodcut master of Mainz Livy illustrations , the woodcarver called that since 1505 reproduced woodcuts to the famous print edition of the texts of Livy has created.

This richly illustrated edition was printed in Mainz by Johann Schöffer, son of Gutenberg's successor Peter Schöffer . The 250 woodcut illustrations are a masterful example of the classic woodcut art of the first half of the 16th century.

In addition to landscapes, portraits of well-known contemporaries of the master can be recognized in the war and battle scenes.

The woodcuts were also reused in later Livius editions, e.g. B. in an edition of Livy from 1520 in Spain.
