Home Squadron

The Mississippi was the flagship of the Home Squadron during the Mexican-American War
The Home Squadron ( German Heimatgeschwader ) was part of the United States Navy in the mid-19th century .
It was set up in 1838 and was intended to protect coastal trade , help ships in distress, fight pirates and the slave trade, and prepare ships for use in remote areas. It was used in the Mexican-American War and disbanded at the beginning of the Civil War , when the ships were needed to block the Confederate ports .
