The Horizontal Falls are two tidal , waterfall-like compensatory currents in Talbot Bay in the Western Australian Kimberley region .

Although the name suggests this, the Horizontal Falls are by no means waterfalls, but only narrow drains from side bays of the tidal Talbot Bay.

The direction of flow depends on the respective tidal phase . During the tide change, enormous masses of water push through the two narrow straits at high speed. Since the outflow is delayed due to the small cross-section, the two basins and the bay have different water levels depending on the respective tidal phase, which is the cause of the equalizing current . Together with the flow effects, this creates the impression of a waterfall.
