The Horniman Museum is a museum in Forest Hill , London Borough of Lewisham , England . Founded by the Victorian tea merchant Frederick John Horniman, it contains his collection of natural history, cultural artifacts and musical instruments.
history
Commissioned in 1898, the Arts and Crafts- style museum designed by Charles Harrison Townsend opened in 1901.
In 1911 an extension was built on the west side of the main building, which originally housed a reading room and library. This extension was donated by Emslie Horniman, son of Frederick John Horniman, and also designed by Townsend. In 1999 the museum was closed for renovation work. It reopened on June 14, 2002.
The Horniman Museum is a public corporation of the Ministry of Culture, Media and Sport and was set up as a company and non-profit organization under English law.
CUE building
The Horniman Museum contains the building of the CUE (Center for Understanding the Environment). This opened in 1996 and was designed by the local architecture firm Architype. The building has a grass roof and was built from sustainable materials. It also includes passive ventilation.
Collections
The Horniman specializes in collections in anthropology, natural history and musical instruments and has a collection of 350,000 objects. The ethnography and music departments have been awarded Designated status , a prize for important museums. One of the most famous exhibitions is the large collection of stuffed animals. The aquarium is also known for its unique design.

The museum has 6.5 hectares (65,000 m²) of gardens, including:

- a nature trail
- an ornamental garden
