Building history

As early as 1793, a hotel was built on the property, called "To the three hooks". In 1811 it was replaced by a new building called "Hotel de Russie". The three-story building with two entrances was decorated with Empire reliefs. On Chorążczyzna Street (now Tchaikovsky Street) there was a large garden with gazebos. The hotel was taken over in 1816 by the Lviv businessman Georg Hofmann (1778–1839) and named after the first name of the new owner. The hotel was demolished in 1899. Before that, in 1888, the Lviv architect Alfred Kamienobrodzki designed a new three-storey hotel building, but it was never erected.

A picture of Franz Kowalischyn and some photographs have been preserved, one of which shows the demolition of the old building in April 1899.

The new hotel building was built from 1899 to 1901 according to the plans of the Viennese architectural team, Büro Fellner & Helmer , with the participation of the Lviv architects Iwan Lewiński and Julian Cybulski.

The hotel was officially opened on January 8, 1901. At that time it comprised 93 rooms, including 32 luxury apartments. The hotel was extended by two floors in 1906 according to plans by Jan Lewiński. From 1910 to 1912 the bookstore of Alfred Altenberg was on the ground floor, from 1912 to 1920 the publishing house of Altenberg, Seyfarth, Wende u. In 1927 the hotel was thoroughly rebuilt, a fifth floor was added from the southern side. In 1932 the reading room and the restaurant were modernized according to a project by Tadeusz Wróbel. During the Soviet rule from 1939 to 1941 and from 1944 to 1990 it was managed by the Soviet travel agency and was called "Inturist".

architecture

The historicist style mix of today's four-storey building, with its dominant Renaissance and some Art Nouveau elements and a mansard roof , which is based on the French city hotel architecture of the 17th century, was reinforced by multiple renovations. In the niches of the side facades are sculptures from the four continents, a work by Leonard Marconi and Antoni Popiel . The main facade shows a bas-relief of St. George, namesake of the hotel, on the top floor above the central projection. It is a work by Antoni Popiel .
