Dog husband

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The dog husband was the last part of the old Pregel in Königsberg (Prussia) .

location

The two Pregel arms enclose Kneiphof . The last piece of the old Pregel before the union with the new one was called the dog husband. It begins at the now no longer preserved Krämerbrücke , which separated the Hundegatt from the Lower Fish Market , and ends at the also no longer preserved Green Bridge , where the stock exchange is located. On the western side of the Hundegatt lay the Lastadie , the old port.

At the Lastadie there were storehouses (Königsberg) from the 16th to 18th centuries. The oldest of these half-timbered granaries were the bear, bull and stallion. The port on Hundegatt lost its importance when the new port basin on the lower Pregel was built in Contienen in 1924 . The concrete granaries were the largest in the world.

This is how the Lastadie became a nostalgic tourist attraction. The storage district was destroyed in the Second World War by the fires following the bombing of Königsberg by the Royal Air Force at the end of August 1944 and was never rebuilt.
