Hunter Douglas is a Dutch manufacturer of blinds and cladding for external facades.

history

The German Henry Sonnenberg laid the foundation stone of the company in 1919 by founding a company to manufacture machine tools in Düsseldorf . After the seizure of power in 1933, Sonnenberg fled from the National Socialists to the Netherlands and rebuilt his company there. Together with Joe Hunter, Sonnenberg founded a joint venture in 1946 for the development of technologies and tools for the casting and machining of aluminum. This is how the manufacture of aluminum window blinds came under the name Hunter Douglas. These blinds were particularly popular in America and were produced by independent manufacturers in the United States and Canada who were integrated into a joint network. The business in the United States was sold in 1956, Hunter Douglas' headquarters were relocated to Montreal , and blind construction outside the United States continued. From 1962, aluminum ceiling panels were also offered. Since 1969 the company has been listed on the Montreal and Amsterdam stock exchanges. Since 1971, the worldwide headquarters of the Hunter Douglas Group with Hunter Douglas NV has been in Rotterdam . After the US branch was bought back in 1976, the business continued to expand and expanded into the Asian region, among others. Today the company describes itself as the market leader in the field of daylight regulation.

Ralph Sonnenberg, heir to Henry Sonnenberg and CEO of Hunter Douglas, is one of the richest Dutch people today .
