Hur säker är bilen?
Hur säker är bilen? ( Eng. How safe is the car? ) is a biennial report published by the Swedish insurance group Folksam since 1983 . For car models, the relative risk of death or permanent disability is assessed on the basis of statistics from real accidents. The safest car models receive awards or purchase recommendations.
methodology
The evaluations are based on accident data from the national information system STRADA (Swedish Traffic Accident Data Acquisition). The following are used:
- Police reports of two car collisions. The result depends heavily on the crash behavior and the mass of the cars.
- Emergency services reports of injuries.
The numbers of car accidents and injuries taken into account in the evaluations as well as the car models evaluated are as follows:
report | Accidents | Injured | Car models | ||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Period | number | Period | number | ||
2001 | 1994-2000 | 62,000 | k. A. | k. A. | 95 |
2003 | 1994-2002 | 76,100 | k. A. | 27,600 | 105 |
2005 | 1994-2004 | 94,100 | k. A. | 35,400 | 138 |
2007 | 1995-2007 | 117,000 | k. A. | 38,000 | 170 |
2009 | 1995-2008 | 105,000 | k. A. | 29,000 | 190 |
2011 | 1995-2010 | 115,000 | k. A. | 31,500 | 172 |
2013 | 1994-2013 | 158,000 | 2003-2013 | 38,000 | 238 |
2015 | 1994-2015 | 178,000 | 2003-2015 | 50,000 | 254 |
All accidents involving a particular car model are analyzed to determine the risk of injury to the occupants in that particular car model in relation to the average car. The degree of injuries that occurred is taken into account. For example, the risk of permanent disability is much greater with a head injury than with a broken rib. A car model is therefore given a lower rating if the number of head injuries is large compared to the number of broken ribs. As a result, a measure of the risk of death or permanent disability in the event of an accident is determined for the respective car model in relation to the average car.
This is intended to circumvent the limitation of crash tests that their results do not correspond 100 percent to the behavior of the tested car models under real accident conditions. In addition, in contrast to crash tests, the evaluation of the car models takes place across all classes. This allows the passive safety of car models of different classes to be compared with one another. Furthermore, the safety of car models can be compared with each other, which (e.g. due to the year of construction) have not been subjected to the same crash test procedure.
In a paper from the ESV conference (International Technical Conference on the Enhanced Safety of Vehicles) 2001, a correlation was found between the assessment of car models in the Euro NCAP crash test and in the Folksam report. Per star in the Euro NCAP crash test, the risk of death or permanent disability decreases by 7%.
It takes at least two to three years for a new car model to be included in the report due to a sufficient number of accidents.
