A cover (especially in Switzerland also Housse , from French la housse = "cover, blanket, cover, protective cover") is a cover for furniture. It is usually used for seating furniture, but can also be used as a table cover for bar tables or marquee furniture .

function

The cover is adapted to the shape of the furniture and mostly made on a textile basis. On the one hand, covers serve to protect against soiling or wear and tear and, on the other hand, can be used as a decorative element. They are therefore also suitable for upgrading old seating furniture.

Occasionally the term slip cover is also used synonymously. Although the production method and material are the same, the term only partially covers the purpose of a cover. While one z. B. in seating furniture under a protective cover usually understands the edging of the seat and backrest upholstery, the cover wraps the entire piece of furniture. Thus, the cover is not only used for protection, but also for decoration.

Appearance

The design aspect in particular has gained in importance in the last few decades. The character of a room can be influenced by means of covers of different colors (classic covers are usually in white), materials and designs . There are covers in different shapes and designs. There are covers for chairs, tables, high tables, armchairs, sofas, bed frames (under the mattress), garden furniture and beer tables. Beer table covers consist of two covers for the benches and the large cover for the beer table. Slippers are offered in different fabric qualities; they are available in jacquard, microfiber, polyester, linen, satin or twill. The quality and lifespan vary depending on the type of fabric offered.

Manufacturing

In addition to industrial production and large-scale sales , individual cover making is now a rare craft . In Germany there are only a few companies that make covers. In addition to the craft ( washing , sewing , ironing ), cover makers have to be creative and pay attention to quality when choosing fabrics . In order to survive in this market niche , they have to have artistic skills and meet the tastes of customers. There are, for example, different types of base borders, from smooth to various folds . Cotton fabrics or fabrics with a cotton content are often used for home furniture . These must be washed before sewing so that they do not shrink later.
