Hydrolabile plant

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Compared to hydrostable plants, hydrolable plants allow greater fluctuations in their water content. In extreme cases, this can lead to complete dehydration. Hydro-labile plants include not only the poikilohydric plants but also many herbaceous marsh plants .

The typical representatives of hydrolabile plants are algae , lichens , some mosses and a few ferns .

In the higher plants there are often hydrolabile stages. For example, pollen grains or seeds are hydrolabile stages of hydrostable species. These species are grouped under the collective term " resurrection plants ". When dehydrated, the life processes are almost completely switched off. They are only reactivated in the shortest possible time when there is sufficient water supply. In this way, these plants can survive years of drought.
