The Hymno da Carta (Portuguese for: Anthem of the Charter) was officially adopted as the national anthem of the Kingdom of Portugal in May 1834. It replaced the Hymno Patriótico . It was composed by the Portuguese King Peter I. "Carta" stands for the constitutional charter given by King Portugal . After the country became a republic in 1911, the anthem was replaced by A Portuguesa .
