The Hymno Patriótico (Portuguese for: Patriotic Hymn) is considered to be Portugal's first national anthem. The song was influenced by the cantata “La Speranza o sia l'Augurio Felice”. The text changed several times until 1821. After Peter I ascended the throne, the song “ Hymno da Carta ” became more popular and in 1834 it was officially adopted as a hymn.
Patriotic hymn
Here, oh you noblest king!
Are the sacred oaths
that the honorable Lusos declare
Coming in freedom, Coming
in freedom declaring Coming in freedom.
For you, for the fatherland
, our blood is shed.
For fame there is only:
win or die
win or die
or die
or die!
