Mikhail Jakowlewitsch Zwilling ( Russian Михаил Яковлевич Цвиллинг ; born July 24, 1925 in Odessa ; † July 12, 2013 in Moscow ) was a Russian translator , interpreter , linguist , translation scholar . He was Professor of Translation Theory at Moscow State Linguistic University .

Life

Michail Jakowlewitsch Zwilling was born in 1925 at a time of political upheaval. Because his father was a representative of the Soviet foreign trade bank and his mother spoke German, the family stayed mainly abroad and eventually settled in Poland. There they spoke almost exclusively German, even at home, to cover up their Russian origins. After their father's death, when Michail Zwilling was nine years old, they returned to Moscow, where he attended the German-language Karl Liebknecht School (Moscow) . In 1941, after the school had been closed under some pretext, he and other classmates were taken to the Dnieper to build military fortifications against German attacks. During the war he worked as an interpreter on the front lines. Through a friend of his German communist, he successfully applied to the Military Foreign Language Institute (Russian Военный Институт Иностранных Языков) for a course to become a military translator and thus probably saved his life. Since German-speaking students were rare, this faculty was evacuated before the invasion of the Wehrmacht. After the deportation of all Russian Germans, Michail Zwilling, with his good knowledge of German, first became a tutor and, at the age of 17, a lecturer. In 1953 he defended his dissertation and in 1985 habilitation he a professor at the Academy of Sciences of the USSR . From 1945 to 1956 Zwilling was employed as a German teacher at the Military Institute of Foreign Languages. Until 1962 he worked as a Germanist at the Moscow State Institute for International Relations . He was then head of German translation studies at the Moscow State Pedagogical Institute until 1975 and head of the foreign language department at the USSR Academy of Sciences (Академия наук СССР) until 1987. Until his death, Zwilling worked as a professor of general theory, history and criticism of translation at the Moscow State Linguistic University .
