Hyperarousal is a form of overexcitability of the autonomic nervous system.

“Hyperarousal is a state of sustained increased activation level of the autonomic nervous system (over-excitability), which manifests itself in increased tension with restlessness, difficulty falling and staying asleep , irritability, aggressive behavior, concentration disorders, excessive vigilance ( hypervigilance ), increased frightfulness and psychosomatic symptoms . "
