International Commission on Radiological Protection

The International Commission on Radiological Protection ( International Commission on Radiological Protection , ICRP ) is an international commission that has the aim of recommendations and guidelines scientific knowledge in radiation protection implemented for the benefit of public health. It is based in Ottawa , Canada.

The ICRP was founded in Stockholm in 1928 at the second congress of the International Society for Radiology as the International Committee for Protection against X-rays and Radium (IXRCP). It was given its current name in 1950.

The current summary report No. 103 (Recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection) dates from 2007.

The International Commission on Radiation Protection consists of a main commission and five standing committees, which are dedicated to the following topics.

  • Radiation effects
  • Dosimetry of radiation exposure
  • Radiation protection in medicine
  • Implementation of the recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection
  • protection of the environment

A scientific secretariat based in Sweden oversees the commission and its committees. In addition to these, there are temporary working groups that deal with special tasks and issues.
