The main tenant on completion was Signal insurance . Today the entire building is used by the city of Dortmund. The name IWO originally comes from the property developer IWO-Immobilien, who had to file for bankruptcy shortly before the building was completed. Today the owner is the Dortmund real estate company Dreier.

In the mid-1990s, the high-rise was extensively modernized and given a completely new mirror facade.

Due to its close proximity to Dortmund Central Station, the high-rise can be seen from the platform. Together with the RWE Tower and the Sparkasse skyscraper , the IWO skyscraper forms an urban skyline at this point.

The IWO high-rise has recently been outlined with yellow light. This is a measure taken by the city so that the skyline can also be clearly seen in the cityscape at night.
