Ian Main

Ian Main (* around 1957) is a British geophysicist . He is Professor of Seismology and Rock Physics at Edinburgh University .

Main received his bachelor's degree in physics from the University of St. Andrews in 1979 , his master's degree in geophysics from the University of Durham in 1980 and his doctorate in seismology in Edinburgh in 1986 , where he has been a part-time lecturer at Napier College in Edinburgh since 1981 was and from 1982 on the British Geological Survey. From 1985 he was a lecturer at the University of Reading and from 1989 at the University of Edinburgh, where he became a reader and 2000 professor.

Ian Main deals with geological and other disasters, specifically earthquakes, earthquake risks and earthquake forecasting and data collection for this in real time. He was a member of a commission in Italy after the catastrophic earthquake in L'Aquila in 2009 , which also led to a crisis of confidence and a lawsuit against earthquake experts. He also deals with the observation and statistical data analysis of oil and gas reservoirs and those for carbon dioxide injection.

Main is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh . In 1997 he was Bullerwell Lecturer at the Royal Astronomical Society and in 2014 he received the Louis Néel Medal .
