Idanthyrsos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Idanthyrsos was a Scythian king at the time of the Scythian campaign of the Persian great king Dareios I (514 BC). He was the son of a Saulios. According to Herodotus , Idanthyrsos is said to have prevented the Persians from conquering his homeland by repeatedly withdrawing from the Persian attacks. He sent messengers to Dareios to explain that the Scythians did not flee out of fear, but only did what they did in peace. They have no permanent settlements to fear for, only the graves of their ancestors.
