ifconfig

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

ifconfig is a command line utility under Unix , which for configuration and control of IP - network interface is used. The name stands for " i nter f ace config urator". The tool originally appeared in 4.2BSD as part of the BSD TCP / IP suite. It thus became the standard tool and is still used today.

The program is usually used to set up a network interface in order to set the IP address and the network mask and to activate or deactivate the interface.

During the boot process, many Unix systems use shell scripts that call ifconfig to configure the network adapters.

Ifconfig has been replaced by iproute2 (/ sbin / ip) on Linux . Most distributions still include ifconfig.
