The Igreja de Nossa Senhora das Mercês (also: Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Jesus ) is the Catholic parish church of the former municipality of Mercês in the Portuguese capital Lisbon .

history

The church was part of the neighboring Convento de Jesus of the Franciscan Third Order . A first church was built between 1615 and 1623 on Largo de Jesus . It was badly damaged in the 1755 earthquake. The current church dates from the third quarter of the 18th century and was built in the Baroque style according to plans by the architect Joaquim de Oliveira .

Since the abolition of the Christian order in Portugal in 1834, it has served as the parish church for the municipality of Mercês.
