The Igreja de São João de Deus is a Catholic parish church in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon . It is the eponymous church of the former municipality of São João de Deus .

history

At the site of the church at today's Praça de Londres, there was originally a cattle farm owned by the wealthy João do Outeiro. With the expansion of the city to the area north of Arroios , the Lisbon Patriarch Cerejeira had several new parishes built in the early 1950s.

The architect António Lino was commissioned to build the parish church. He created a monumental building that seeks to unite modernity with tradition. The executive engineer was Gonçalo Leopoldo da Mota, the sculptors Leopoldo de Almeida and Soares Branco, the ceramist Jorge Barradas and the painter Domingos Rebelo worked on the furnishings .

The church was consecrated on March 8, 1953 by Cardinal Cerejeira.
