Ilwad Elman (* 1990 in Mogadishu , Somalia ) is a Somali peace and human rights activist and works in the Somali NGO "Elman Peace and Human Rights Center" with her mother and founder of the NGO, Fartuun Adan .

Life

Ilwad was born in 1990 in the Somali capital Mogadishu as one of four daughters. She grew up with her parents, Elman Ali Ahmed , a peace activist, and her mother, Fartuun Adan , a social activist. Elman's father died in 1996 during the height of the Somali civil war . The family then emigrated to Canada in 1999 , and Ilwad attended an educational institution in the Canadian capital, Ottawa.

In 2010 Ilwad Elman returned to Somalia with her mother to found the Elman Peace and Human Rights Center. Elman's younger sister Iman Elman also followed them and is now serving in the Somali military.

The mother of the four daughters, Fartuun Adan, works as the managing director of the NGO, with her daughter Ilwad Elman accompanying her. The two NGOs are the first institution in the country to offer support and care to victims of violent sexual crimes. The NGO has various sub-groups, including a group for younger women (“Sister Somalia”), who are accompanied by Elman. In addition to his work at the Elman Peace and Human Rights Center, Elman works with various smaller groups to care for street children in Mogadishu (“Street Children Task Force”), supported by the UNICEF children's aid organization.

The first TEDx conference in Somalia took place in mid-2012 , organized by First Somali Bank . The aim of the conference was to highlight the improvements and development of the Somali economy and society. Ilwad appeared as a guest speaker and explained the work of her women's group Sister Somalia as well as its significance for the post-war and peace process in Somalia.

In 2014 Elman received a fellowship from the US State Department's Young African Leaders Initiative .
