The Elfa company , later Impulsa Elsterwerda , was distinguished for milking technology in the early 1950s as part of the agricultural machinery industry in the GDR and was able to develop into one of the world's leading manufacturers in this field. In the period 1970 to 1978 the company had the status of a combine.

The Elfa factory in Elsterwerda was founded in 1894 for the production of bicycles. Motorcycles were added from the late 1920s. Arms production began in the mid-1930s. In April 1945 the plant was completely destroyed by a bomb attack. After the war, the production of bicycles and other everyday items could be started with salvaged material and machines. From 1948 rotating compressed air drilling and grinding machines were produced.

In 1952 the company received an order to develop and manufacture milking systems. At the same time he was assigned to the VVB agricultural, construction and woodworking machinery. In the field of product development, the central research and development center for milk production was established in Elsterwerda in 1955, which was later integrated into the Elfa company. As early as 1957, the products of the Elfa Elsterwerda company came onto the market under the trademark "IMPULSA". The company had grown from 170 employees in 1952 to around 1,000 employees in 1965.

In 1970 the Impulsa combine was founded with its headquarters in Elsterwerda. In 1970 it had around 5,000 employees and was responsible for the development and production of machines and equipment and systems for cattle and pig farming and milk processing. In the 1970s, the potential of the combine was expanded primarily through the allocation of a number of small and medium-sized businesses, including the Jessen business. In 1978 the Impulsa combine was dissolved and the individual operations were assigned to the Progress Agricultural Combine . In connection with this, the plant engineering company Impulsa Elsterwerda was established with around 2,700 employees. In addition to the operation in Elsterwerda, this included operations in Jessen and Annaburg as well as legally independent operations in Zwenkau, Lobenstein and Burg.

At the end of the 1980s, the plant construction company Impulsa Elsterwerda with its operations in Jessen, Annaburg, Dresden, Pirna and Cottbus had around 2,900 employees, including around 2,100 at the Elsterwerda site, and a turnover of around 500 million GDR marks. After turbulent developments in the 1990s with regard to the preservation and privatization of the company, the Impulsa AG company was established in Elsterwerda in 2002, building on the traditions and product profile of the former Elfa company and plant engineering company Impulsa. Another successor company is Annaburger Nutzfahrzeug GmbH, founded in 1991 in Annaburg.

Establishments

With the formation of the combine in 1970, only a few centralized management and service units were created for this economic unit in Elsterwerda. In essence, a group-like organization and management was practiced with extensive independence of the combine operations.

The most important companies of the Impulsa combine were:

  • Elfa Elsterwerda
  • Agricultural machinery construction Falkensee
  • Kyffhäuser Hut Artern
  • Lommatzsch damper construction
  • Vehicle plant Annaburg
  • Agricultural engineering project Dresden

Products

The first milking systems were produced from 1953. By the end of the 1950s, an extensive range of milking systems was available for different conditions and herd sizes, including:

  • Can and pipe milking systems based on the M 59 milking machine
  • Herringbone milking parlor systems of the M 601 type
  • Mobile pasture milking parlors of the type M 820

From the mid-1960s, the IMPULSA Physiomatik milking system and the rotary milking parlor systems for large-scale animal production facilities were introduced

The main products from the mid-1970s were:

  • Can milking systems of the M 610 series
  • Pipe milking systems of the M 620 / M 622 series
  • Tandem milking parlor systems of the M 670 / M 671 / M 672 series
  • Herringbone milking parlor systems of the M 632 series
  • Rotary milking parlors in tandem form (M 690-16) and herringbone form (M 691-40)
  • Mobile pasture milking parlor systems of the M 685 / M 686 / M 687 series
  • Milk cooling systems (storage and flow cooling)
  • Cleaning and disinfection technology
  • Vacuum tank trailer HTS 100.27, from the mid-1980s as a series with container volumes in the range from 3 to 10 m³ (program of the company or part of the Annaburg company)

In the 1980s, this program for herd sizes of more than 2,000 cows was diversified and further developed (e.g. M 692-60 milking parlor), the IMPULSA Physiomatic milking system was perfected in the direction of automation and with the introduction of a production control and management system in milk production began. In addition, there were series of tipping and roller floor trailers with rigid drawbars with a payload of 4 to 10 t.

  • Milk processing (program of the Kyffhäuserhütte Artern)
  • Conveying and feeding technology (programs of the Agricultural Machinery Manufacturers Falkensee and Damper Manufacturing Lommatzsch)
  • Project planning and implementation of large-scale systems for animal husbandry (program of the Dresden agricultural engineering project)
