content

The monks Kliopa and Diodor unload sacks of rye from their farm wagon for grinding. The miller Alexej Dorofejitsch Birjukow, a burly middle-aged bachelor, is looking for an argument with the two busy workers. This time it's about the fishing rights in the river. The monks continue to work in silence at first, but cannot avoid the argument. Both are happy to take the grain of the monastery to another mill, but there is none far and wide. When the miller's mother approaches - she lives with Alexei's married brother Vasily in the suburbs - the quarrel moderates; suppresses the strong language against the monks and their archimandrites . The miller's visit is inconvenient. Now he pokes at his brother, the occasional drinker Vasily. The mother asks the wealthy son for help; not for himself, but for the impoverished son Vasily and his four children. The large family has to sleep in a room in the suburbs. Alexei does not give anything. The mother had feared this reaction from the rich son. So she laments the miller's lifestyle. He loots the people. Nevertheless the old woman gives the son a gingerbread. The miller can no longer contain himself and resolutely rejects the slightly crushed gift. From his wallet he fished out a twenty kopeck piece from under the pack of bills and jingling silver coins and, blushing, handed it to his mother when he said goodbye.
