Infection pressure

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The infection pressure is a parameter in epidemiology that characterizes the risk of infection . It depends on the number of pathogens ( bacteria , viruses ) in the immediate vicinity of the organism that is potentially susceptible to the pathogen.

A high number of pathogens, i.e. a high infection pressure , makes the occurrence of an infectious disease more likely, since more pathogens can penetrate the natural mucous membrane barrier per unit of time and thus the minimum infectious dose is achieved.

Measures to reduce the infection pressure are, for example, regular cleaning and disinfection , quarantine of sick people / animals, avoidance of large crowds of people or animals, control of vectors .
