Information rate
The information rate (also code rate or simply rate ) is a term used in coding theory .
The rate of a block code of length over alphabet , called the per code word transmitted information symbols relative to the length of the words:

The following applies here: the encoded data contain more redundancy than the uncoded data, i.e. contain additional symbols. The redundancy is analogous .
In the case of linear codes , the code has exactly the elements. Their rate is therefore the quotient of the dimension of the code and the length of the words:
