Ingrid Kummels

Ingrid Kummels (born August 16, 1956 in Santa Monica ) is a German old American scholar who conducts research on transnationalism, media ethnology and visual anthropology in the Americas.

biography

Kummels studied ethnology, geography and sociology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich from 1976 to 1982 and graduated in 1982 with a master's degree in ethnology. In 1987 she did her PhD in ethnology in Munich. Between 1988 and 2002 she was the co-author of numerous TV documentaries on Cuba, Mexico and Peru, which were produced on behalf of German television. She carried out extensive field research in Mexico, the USA, Cuba and Peru on the topics of migration and transnational community building in relation to music, dance, sport and (audio) visual media. She is currently researching transnational indigenous communities between Mexico and the USA. In 2003 she completed her habilitation in ethnology at the Free University of Berlin . Since 2008, Kummels has been a university professor for ancient American studies / cultural anthropology at the Latin America Institute of the Free University of Berlin , of which she was chair from 2011 to 2013. In 2018 she taught and researched as a visiting professor "Alberto Galindo Flores" at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, Lima.
