Initial approach fix

The Initial Approach Fix (IAF) is a waypoint at which a standard approach procedure for IFR approaches begins. At this point, the pilot sets the landing (engl. Approach ) to an airfield , and the phase ends of the sinking or cruise flight.

At the initial approach fix starts initial approach .

This term, and thus the strict distinction between descent and landing, is not used when flying under VFR conditions .

After subsequent to the initial approach Intermediate Fix (IF) starts between approach ( Intermediate Approach ), which is an extension of the final approach.
