Inmarsat C is a two-way packet data service operated by the telecommunications company Inmarsat . The service is approved for use under the Global Maritime Distress Safety System (GMDSS) and meets the requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for the Ship Security Alert System (SSAS) .

Inmarsat C works digitally and offers the following communication options:

The data transfer also enables SMS and emails to be sent and received . The service also offers remote monitoring, sea chart updates, weather information, safety information (MSI), maritime safety, GMDSS and SafetyNET and FleetNet services. Inmarsat C does not offer telephony / voice transmission.

The service is operated via an Inmarsat-C transceiver or a mini-C transceiver with lower power consumption. Both offer the same service.

Since Inmarsat C can be operated with a mini transceiver in a relatively small space and is part of the GMDSS, the system is also of interest for recreational shipping .

The service is available for maritime, terrestrial and aeronautical use.
