Innarawanteš

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Innarawanteš are a group of Hittite deities. In the Luwian area they are known as Annaruminzi. They arose from the reproduction of the Hittite patron god Innara or his Luwian equivalent Annari.

From their origin in the patron god Innara, the Innarawanteš took over their task as earth-bound patron deities. Like many groups of deities that arose through the multiplication of a deity, the Innarawanteš also have demonic traits.

The names Innarawanteš or Annarumenzi can be translated as "the strong" (from Hittite innaru or Luwian annari- "strong, strong, sprightly"). The Innarawanteš are also in the company of the Luwian god Šanta , who combines warlike and underworldly aspects. They are described as deities who wear bloody clothing, have tied the sashes of the mountain dwellers, have girdled daggers and hold taut bows and arrows. This description and the obviously bellicose nature associated with it bring the Innarawanteš close to the seven bellicose companions of the Mesopotamian epidemic and underworld god Nergal / Erra .
