The Institute of Authorized Representatives at the European Patent Office (epi) is the professional association of all European patent attorneys . The Institute currently has around 12,100 members from all 38 contracting states of the European Patent Convention , who are either active in industry or in private practice.

On October 21, 1977, the Administrative Council of the European Patent Organization set up the epi by issuing regulations on the establishment of an institute of professional representatives at the European Patent Office . Thereafter, the epi is headed by a council that is elected by the members of the respective national constituencies and by an executive committee elected by the council, which also includes its president. The epi -Rat has issued internal regulations for its conduct and working methods. Sixteen committees, including numerous sub-committees and working groups, are responsible for handling the tasks that arise. Topics covered by these committees include: B. As an organization, the epi is primarily concerned with the development and effects of patent law. Through its committees, it contributes to the further development of patent law and provides policymakers with legal opinions and specialized advice. The epi is an observer in many advisory bodies of international organizations such as the Standing Advisory Committee before the European Patent Office (SACEPO) or the Standing Committee on Patent Law of the Word Intellectual Property Organization (SCP).
