International Arctic Science Committee

The International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) is a non-governmental organization made up of international science teams. The main research area is the Arctic . The IASC aims to promote Arctic research and the scientific understanding of the Arctic and its role in the Earth system.

The IASC was founded in 1990 and has its secretariat in Potsdam .

The tasks of the IASC are to promote Arctic research. For this purpose, conferences, long-term projects or workshops are held, among other things. Sub-organizations are set up for specific purposes. Specifically, the following are:

  • IPY (International Polar Year): Participation in the International Polar Year 2007/2008
  • ISAC (International study of Arctic Change): An international study on global change in the Arctic
  • ICARP (International Conference on Arctic Research Planning): In November 2005 a conference took place in Copenhagen , which was supposed to plan and coordinate Arctic research for the next 10 to 15 years.
  • ACIA (Arctic Climate Impact Assessment): In cooperation with the Arctic Council , an inventory of climate change in the Arctic and its effects.
  • SAON (Sustaining Arctic Observing Networks): In order to make all observation data from the Arctic more accessible to scientists, SAON was launched. This project collects and manages all data obtained.
