history

The founding of the International Association of Art (IAA / AIAP) goes back to an initiative launched in 1948 as part of the third general conference of UNESCO in Beirut to establish a permanent forum for international visual artists to support the goals of UNESCO. The sixth UNESCO conference in 1951 commissioned its general secretary to convene an international artists' congress, which was finally held in Venice in 1952. The 23 national governments represented there and 48 artists' associations from 19 countries agreed on the goal of founding an international umbrella association for sculptors, painters and engravers. A transitional council and a secretariat in Paris were set up under the chairmanship of the Italian painter Gino Severini . In 1954 the founding general assembly of the IAA / AIAP was finally held in Venice, in which national committees from 18 countries already formed participated as full members, as well as observers from a further 22 countries. Since then, membership has grown to over 90 national committees worldwide, which are divided into five world regions. Since its inception, the IAA / AIAP has had the official status of an advisory organization to UNESCO.
