The International Committee of Memorial Museums in Remembrance of the Victims of Public Crimes ( IC MEMO , German International Committee of Memorials for Victims of State Violence ) is a committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), which was founded in July 2001.

The International Committee of Memorial Museums in Remembrance of the Victims of Public Crimes is one of a total of 30 international committees of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), which maintains close relationships with UNESCO and works with it; The committee is based at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.

founding

The committee was established in 2001 to create a suitable and professional platform for international cooperation. The members of the committee represent museums and memorials of various kinds for the victims of the Holocaust, apartheid, tyranny, military dictatorship and civil war. In doing so, they try to make the complex knowledge and insights into crimes against humanity available to the public at different times and under different conditions.

Goal setting

The aims of the memorials involved are to commemorate the victims of state violence, social oppression and ideologically motivated crime. Most of the memorials are located at the historical locations where the events took place or at places chosen by survivors of this violence. For this reason, this relatively young committee set itself the goal of responsible memory of history and the promotion of dialogue in order to promote a culture of peace in the form that through education and knowledge of historical events, the ability to analyze before the horizon of the History is passed on to teach and remember history.

Known members

Well-known members of the commission include Jan Erik Schulte , Hannah Arendt Institute for Totalitarian Research , current Vice-President of the commission for the 2011–2013 election period, and Christiane Hoss , General Secretary and Treasurer of the Committee for the 2011–2013 election period, and Norbert Haase and Marcus Ohlhauser as board member of the committee.
