A parasitic open access journal is a publication that uses elements of the open access concept, but behaves exploitative and tends to be corrupt and publishes trivialities without real scientific content.

"Get me off Your Fucking Mailing List"

"Get me off your fucking mailing list. Get me off your fucking mailing list. Get me off your fucking mailing list. Get me off your fucking mailing list. Get me off your fucking mailing list. Get me off your fucking mailing list. "

- Mazières and Kohler: "Get me off Your Fucking Mailing List"

In 2005, computer scientists David Mazières and Eddie Kohler wrote a text entitled "Get me off Your Fucking Mailing List" and submitted it as a protest for the ninth World Multiconference on Systemics, Cybernetics and Informatics . This conference is known for spam and low standards in the approval of texts. The text consisted entirely of repetitions of the sentence "Get me off your fucking mailing list" ( "Take me off your mailing list shit" ).

In 2014, Peter Vamplew submitted Mazières and Kohler's text to the International Journal of Advanced Computer Technology with satirical intent after receiving an email from the magazine. To Vamplew's surprise, the text was checked, rated "excellent" in the journal's peer review process , and approved for publication. The text was not published because Vamplew did not pay the required $ 150 fee.

The fact that a text consisting solely of repetitions of the phrase "Get me off your fucking mailing list" was approved for publication led observers to question the seriousness and scientific values of the International Journal of Advanced Computer Technology . The editors have been accused of maximizing revenue through publication fees over editing texts and promoting information science.

That is to say, they operate as scholarly vanity presses and publish articles in exchange for the author fee. They are characterized by various level of deception and lack of transparency in their operations. For example, some publishers may misrepresent their location, stating New York instead of Nigeria, or they may claim a stringent peer review where none really exists. "
