The International Maritime Confederation (IMC) is the umbrella organization of maritime associations and naval associations at European level. In German-speaking countries it is also known as the International Seafarers' Federation (ISF).

purpose

The purpose of the federation is the joint promotion of maritime understanding and the dissemination of maritime ideas on the basis of international cooperation.

tasks

  • Establishing contact and deepening connections between the associations and the subordinate structures in an effort to promote trust and friendship,
  • working on the public with regard to maritime awareness,
  • intensifying the discussion about the need for maritime security,
  • Introducing young people to maritime issues, especially under the aspect of economic and humane components and
  • maintaining maritime traditions that are worth preserving .

history

In 1967, the German Navy Federation (DMB) founded a joint association with its French partner association “Fédération des Associations de Marins et de Marins Anciens Combattants” (FAMMAC). This was the nucleus for the IMC / ISF, whose statutes came into force in 1972 as part of the DMB Congress of Representatives in Duisburg. Founding members were maritime associations and clubs from Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Austria and Germany. In the following years Great Britain (Royal Naval Association), Italy (Associazone Nationale Marinai d'Italia) and Croatia (Hrvatska Pomorska Straza) joined the federation. Only one association can represent one nation at a time. The chairmanship of the federation changes every three years, with France holding the first presidency. In October 2012 the presidency was transferred to the German Navy Federation (DMB). The official business is currently carried out by the President of the DMB, Karl Heid, based in Laboe near Kiel.

activities

Annual IMC meetings are held; the 38th meeting will be held in October 2012 in the Netherlands. The international IMC congresses, which are held every three years, have a larger group of participants. The IMC's youth sailing camps also take place annually. The sailing camp 2012 was opened from 9th to 19th July in Ostend, Belgium, 2013 it will be organized by the DMB in Germany.
