Questions relating to soil research and agricultural tillage were discussed in the various specialist commissions and working groups . The number of members rose from 550 (1950) to 7000 in 1998.

The world soil map , which was created in the 1960s and 1970s, is considered to be the most important scientific contribution of the ISSS . In 1998 the ISSS was restructured and renamed the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS).
